In my dream, I was lying across a tire swing, my arms and legs moving freely as the tire took me in all different directions. It was a rush, a sense of freedom, a sense of letting myself go. The more directions the swing took me, the more I felt an inward sense of calm. I heard a distant ringing. Then the ringing became deafening, causing me to lose my balance on the swing. I flipped over, and as my face met the ground, my body jolted awake. I opened my eyes.
As I stumbled to answer my ringing phone, I looked behind me. Jack lay asleep and naked on the floor, curled up with a couch pillow covering his stomach. I grabbed for the phone.
âHello?â
Grandmaâs voice greeted me. âGracelynn?â
âYes?â
âWhat are you doing?â
I sank to the kitchen floor, fearful that my grandma knew what I had been doing all night with Jack. âNothing. Why?â I reached for a kitchen towel, trying to cover myself up.
âDo you know what time it is?â
âNo.â I squinted to see the clock.
âEight fifty-seven.â
âOkay.â
âGracelynn, do you know what day it is?â
âUh â¦â I tried to piece together the days, scanning my memory. Iâd had session on Friday. âSaturday?â
âGracelynn, are you high?â
âWhat?â
âAre you under the influence of a controlled substance? Have you been ⦠what do they call it ⦠huffing?â
âGood lord, Grandma. No.â
âDo you have the intestinal flu?â
âNo.â
âAre your car tires flat?â
âNo.â
âYour feet bound together, preventing you from walking?â
âNo.â
âThen why are you not here? We are waiting.â
I leaned my head back against the wall: Saturday, breakfast at nine. âSorry, Grandma, Iâm not sure I can make breakfast toââ
âWe will wait for you. See you in twenty minutes.â A click on the line told me she was done with the conversation but just getting started with me.
I sat there with the phone in my hand for a moment. Standing up, I quietly walked back into the living room. Jack was gone from the floor. I heard a flush from the bathroom, and out he walked. He wore nothing but a smile as he approached me.
âGood morning. Howâs the most beautiful girl in the world today?â
I felt self-conscious, standing in front of him with a kitchen towel adorned with pink cupcakes barely covering me. He grabbed the towel and tossed it to the floor. He pulled me to him. I could feel him starting to come alive.
âJack, I have breakfast with my grandma.â
âPerfect. Iâm starving.â
I bit the corner of my lip. âYou sure? Itâs my grandma. When it comes to creating uncomfortable situations, sheâs the expert.â
âSure Iâm sure.â He kissed me again. âDo I have time for a quick shower?â
âCan you take it in five minutes or less?â
âNot sure. Iâm a dirty boy. You know, I really need to be lathered up.â He kissed my shoulder.
âOkay, any other time, I would love to do the sexual innuendo thing, but we have exactly eighteen minutes to be sitting in front of my grandma. Get moving.â
***
As we walked into the club, my grandma greeted me with her perfected death stare, and I instantly regretted bringing Jack.
